National Museum of Theater and Dance Lisbon Portugal


The National Theater Museum , designated National Theater and Dance Museum since January 2015, was inaugurated in 1985 and occupies the Monteiro-Mor Palace, located in the parish of Lumiar in Lisbon.

About 260,000 pieces, costumes and props, sets of models, costumes, drawings, caricatures, programs, posters, postcards, scrapbooks, manuscripts, leaflets, albums, records, sheet music, are in the museums collection. paper theaters from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, as well as an estate of about 25,000 photographs.

In addition to its permanent exhibition, the National Theater Museum presents temporary exhibitions dedicated to artists and or theater companies, thus paying tribute to the various and renowned Portuguese stage artists.

The National Theater and Dance Museum is housed in the Monteiro-Mor Palace, an 18th-century building, which after a fire with only the outer walls left, was restored and designed to respond to the museum program.

History of Theater and Performing Arts in Portugal and which correspond to a very small percentage of the total collections of the Museum, today with more than 250,000 pieces.

In January 2015, it was announced that the National Theater Museum will be renamed the National Theater and Dance Museum for its historic role in both areas, in a note from the office of the Secretary of State for Culture, Jorge Barreto Xavier.
