One of the main avenues
One of Portos main avenues (I would say the most important) is that of the Allies. It starts at Rua Formosa (where you can find the City Hall building) and goes down to Praça da Liberdade. It is a very wide avenue, with a very wide central pedestrian promenade, where there are many sculptures, and on both sides of it there are two lanes (one up and one down). It reminds me a little of the Ramblas of Barcelona. On either side of the avenue follow a multitude of nineteenth-century buildings, many of them occupied by hotels and guesthouses. One of the most relevant sculptures of this tour is the equestrian statue of Peter IV, made by the Belgian sculptor Antoine Calmels in 1866.
The statue is placed on a stone pedestal, and is 10 meters high; represents the horse-mounted emperor, holding the "Constitutional Charter" in his right hand.
They will be fascinated with the details
Place full of history and a landmark in the city. I recommend having a close look at the details of the surrounding buildings. They will be fascinated with the details. In addition to being a place that hosts many events in the city.
The great avenue resembles Allies nineteenth wide avenues of Paris and Barcelona. The large central avenue is full of trees and chairs to rest on a visit to Porto, as well as a small lake and various curious sculptures. On one side of the boulevard, we find one of McDonalds most ornate chain, and say the most beautiful. Usually found a shoe shine on the southern part of the avenue, which is the most visited by tourists. An avenue to visit is a big change from the Ribeira area.
Where to stay in Porto
Avenida dos Aliados is certainly among the best places to stay if you want to visit Porto and its main attractions, considering that in any case the city is very small and you can walk anywhere. The avenue is a large enough and not too noisy main street and its architecture closely resembles Passeig de Gracia in Barcelona, note that the last city was rich, I was surprised to see dumped and abandoned baroque buildings. Right next to Avenue two tower clerics, the Lello bookstore and everything is very close to the Duero (15 minutes or so) from the river. There are a number of cafes on the boulevard before reaching the left-hand tower for breakfast at a very reasonable price.
With the Plaza da Liberdade is what would become the central square of Porto, chaired by the Council or Town Hall, where it exercises the executive power of ciudad.Detrás Town Hall, Plaza de Trindade and the Trinity Church is located. This avenue is a very good McDonald and the statue of D. Pedro IV on horseback. There is also the cheap and convenient Chique Hotel ** for your visit to Porto.
The grandeur of its architectural ensemble and its central character make this avenue the "living room" of the city, being the quintessential place where Portuenses concentrate to celebrate special moments. Granite buildings, many of them crowned with lanterns, domes and eaves. Marked by a large central plate completely paved by granite cobblestones, where statues come to life and where the Water Mirror deserves prominence. At its northern top is the town hall building.
