A short but essential trip for those visiting Lisbon.
One of the elevators in Lisbon, and for me, that has more charm. It runs along a steep and narrow streets to end at the Mirador de San Pedro de Alcántara. The car is quite old but kept in perfect condition. Better, go early in the morning to avoid the tourist crowds, and enjoy the trip.
They are 5 minutes drive and 260 meters, but with a slope of almost 18%. At the end is the viewpoint of San Pedro de Alcântara with good views and places to eat.
Connecting Baixa Pombalina (Restauradores Square) to the emblematic Bairro Alto (stop at São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint), in a 265-meter route, the Gloria Lift was inaugurated on October 24, 1885. Designed by Portuguese engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard began to work with water deposits, which gravitated down one lift and up the other. It was then steam powered and from 1914 onwards the electric power finally moved.
Two lifts make the journey upwards and downwards, transporting tourists and residents, being the busiest elevator in Lisbon.

Originally it used a rack and cable balanced by water balance as a traction system, later being moved by steam. In 1915, the second elevator deployed in the city of 7 hills was electrified.
The cars used were two stories, with seats arranged longitudinally. Both cabins currently have only one floor but retain their longitudinal seats.
In 2002, it was classified as a National Monument.
