Pedro Nunes Municipal Museum Alcçcer do Sal Portugal
The Pedro Nunes Municipal Museum was founded on October 15, 1894, as a result of the combination of the archaeological collection deposited in the City Hall and donations from Father Matos Galamba and Joaquim Correia Batista, being one of the oldest museums in the country. In 1896, the archaeological collection was enriched with the donation of António Faria Gentil from the Iron Age estate, from the necropolis of the olive grove of Senhor dos Martyrs. Initially this museum space boiled down to a neighboring compartment of the City Hall Session Room. Since 1914 it occupies the Church of the Holy Spirit, a space in itself with a history of more than 500 years.
After years of abandonment and deviation of some of its rich estate, 25 of April of 1974 inaugurated a new phase in its evolution. The former name of Alcácer do Sal Municipal Museum was changed to Pedro Nunes Municipal Museum, on the initiative of the city council executive, on March 10, 1979, thus honoring one of the largest figures born in this city. In 1988 officially opened to the public with a permanent exhibition of archaeological objects.
Since then, there have been constant improvements and enrichments of the collections, with offers from individuals and deposits of archaeological documentation resulting from the scientific activity of the municipal technical team.
