Get to know Ilha do Farol, one of the most beautiful activities in the Algarve
The western part of the island is also known as Lighthouse Island. The lighthouse that guides the boats gives its name to Farol Beach. Access to the island is by boat from Faro (during the summer season only) and Olhão (all year round) and has basic infrastructure. The small village on the island consists of fishermans houses and holiday accommodation facing the ria.
How to get to Ilha do Farol?
Access to Farol Island is by boat for about 45 minutes.
There are connections from Olhão throughout the year and from Faro from Cais da Porta Nova (in Baixa). The price is about 5 € for adults and 2.50 € for children (4-11 years), round trip.
Farol Beach is located in Ilha da Culatra, Faro municipality and is named after the lighthouse of Cabo de St.ª. Maria.
Access to Farol Island is by boat only. There are connections from Olhão, all year round and from Faro, from Cais da Porta Nova (Portas do Mar).
During this transport, of approximately 40min, one can appreciate the beauty of Ria Formosa as well as the diverse fauna that inhabits this protected area.
Despite its urban and tourist occupation, this beach has an extensive sandy beach, which, towards the east, is gradually becoming quieter.
This beach has a first aid post, a beach support and two beach supports. The service of lifeguards is ensured at two beach posts.
