Archaeological Ruins of Republic Square Melgaço Portugal
The Archaeological Ruins of Praça da República are an original museum nucleus located in the center of the village. Finding yourself underground, you have to go down a few stairs to reach an interesting medieval moat.
Inside you can see a set of well preserved archaeological ruins and some traces related to the ancient fortress. Passing through the moat, some remains of a stone breastplate and several sidewalks dating from different eras can be seen. To help you better understand what you see, there are some informative panels that refer us to the defensive system of the village from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century.
Also be aware of other exposed parts that were discovered during the excavation of the site, such as a catapult projectile and several throwing stones.
Get to know part of the medieval history of Melgaço, taking a walk through this beautiful square, where there is no shortage of buildings of great architectural and historical interest.
