Praia da Barreta  is located on Ilha Deserta, at the entrance of Barra Nova (Barra Faro-Olhão) and lives up to its name because it has no buildings and is little frequented. 
The access is by sea, from the Port Nova Pier (Portas do Mar), and during the crossing you can see small mazes of sand, canals and marsh banks at the tide. Along the way we must also pay attention to the various birds that feed here.

Praia da Barreta is one of the best preserved and least frequented beaches in the Algarve. About 11 km of silence and quiet characterize the Desert Island, where everything seems to fit perfectly between worlds as distinct as land, sea and air. The sand breathes life, feeding several species of mollusks: clams, shells and many other shells. The dune cord keeps its original vegetation preserved and the flora finds its maximum splendor hiding in the inner slope the most fragile species. Here the fauna is also protected, and you can observe Sandpipers, Garajaus, Terns, Terns or Chiretas.

From the pier you can choose to take an interesting environmental route. This course is circular, starting on a wooden walkway (on the Ria side) and ending on the beach (on the coast). Here you can contemplate the existing flora and fauna. 
In the sand, to the west of the place where this walkway ends, it was approved by the Faro Municipal Assembly the creation of an area for the practice of Naturism. 
A rare sanctuary, Desert Island invites you to relax and rest.

 



 

The  island of Barreta , also known as  island Desert , is located in the Ria Formosa, and is the territory further south of Portugal (the southernmost point of Portugal is the Wild Islands, Madeira). The island is uninhabited and is essentially a nature reserve, and has a long sandy beach, little frequented.

It can be reached by boat and there is a commercial career from Faro during the summer.

It is on this island that lies the southernmost point of mainland Portugal, the Cape of Santa Maria, which is not a rocky promontory but just a curve in the beach.

Part of the island is legalized as a place of naturism practice.
