Alberto Sampaio Museum Guimarães National Monument
The Alberto Sampaio Museum is a Portuguese museum, dependent on the Institute of Museums and Conservation. It is installed in the buildings adjacent to the Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, forming the former Collegiate Guimarães, classified as a National Monument since 1910 and World Heritage since 2001. It is located in the former parish of Oliveira do Castelo, currently inserted in the Union of the Parishes of Oliveira, São Paio and São Sebastião, in the city and municipality of Guimarães, Braga district.
The Alberto Sampaio Museum was created in 1928 to house the artistic estate of the extinct Collegiate Church of Our Lady of Oliveira and other churches and convents of Guimarães, then held by the State (Decree Law No. 15209 of March 17, 1928). . On that date, Alfredo Guimarães was appointed State Delegate to accompany the restoration works of the Museum building. On August 1, 1931, the Alberto Sampaio Regional Museum is officially inaugurated. On July 26, 1932, a new Decree-Law that defines and normalizes the functional status of the Museum.On October 19, 1932, Alfredo Guimarães is officially appointed Director of the Museum. In 1967, after several years of construction, the new spaces were inaugurated, and the Museum now has modern services, a conference room and temporary exhibition rooms. Today, the Museum is newly renovated and visitors can visit the old Priory House, admire the Museums beautiful goldsmithery collection and delight in the fresco and board painting that make an interesting counterpoint to the collection of sculpture
