National Coach Museum Lisbon Belém Portugal
The National Coach Museum has the worlds largest collection of decoches and royal carriages from the 16th to the 19th century.
The museum was created in 1905 at the former Belém Royal Palace Riding Stables in Lisbon and is today made up of two buildings: the former Belém Palace Riding Stable (Afonso de Albuquerque Square) and the new front building (Av. of India), opened in 2015.
It brings together a unique collection of around 9 000 objects in the world, including predominantly gala or stately vehicles, some traveling and traveling, from the 16th to 19th centuries, and cavalry accessories.
It has been the most visited national museum of Portugal, with 332,106 visitors in 2017.
The new building, which houses most of the collections, is a project by Paulo Mendes da Rocha (Pritzker Prize 2006) in consortium with Ricardo Bak Gordon and Engineer Rui Furtado.
Situated near the Tagus River in the west of Lisbon, the National Coach Museum occupies an area where the former Army General Offices were located. The Royal Picadeiro, building that was part of the Royal Palace of Belém, today the official residence of the President of the Republic, remains visitable as the exhibition core of the Museum.
Within the museums, you have at your disposal 7 interactive screens, 11 passive screens and 2 large projections that complete the information about the collection. To enrich your visit, get the National Coach Museum Guide, with information about the entire collection, and complement it with the App that allows you to see the interior of the cars and also reveals some curiosities.
