Sociedade Martins Sarmento is a Cultural Institution founded in 1881. To its valuable and diverse heritage belongs the "Martins Sarmento" Archaeological Museum, the main reference of the castreja culture in Portugal and one of the most important museums of all European space where that culture was manifested.


The museum is born in 1885 with the inauguration of a deposit of archaeological objects and from 1888 conditions were created for its proper installation in a gallery created on the beautiful cloister of S. Domingos (14th century).

 

 Sociedade Martins Sarmento , founded in 1881 in honor of  Francisco Martins Sarmento , is a cultural institution in the city of  Guimarães . It is dedicated to the study, conservation and technical and scientific supervision of the archaeological stations of  Citânia de Briteiros  and  Castro de Sabroso  and other archaeological monuments. It has two  museums , a  library  and a  library . Publishes, since 1884, the  Magazine of Guimarães , a periodical publication of scientific nature.
