Keep Tower Museum
Perched on a hill overlooking the village, we find this ancient fortification, testimony of the first moments of Portuguese nationality. Built by Dom Afonso Henriques in the 12th / 13th century, this ancient castle has only a three-story square-roofed tiled keep and part of the old medieval village fence.
Located in a former watchtower, it offers superb views of the surrounding mountains and the historic center of the village, with its narrow streets and stone houses. Strolling in the intramural area, the visitor feels relieved to the background, such the imposing structure and the views it provides.
Built to reinforce the authority of the newly created kingdom of Portugal, this castle played an important role in defending the Alto Minho border.
It is in this quadrangular tower that today we can find the Museum Center of the Keep. Here you can learn a little about Melgaços architectural, historical and cultural heritage. Circulating through its three floors, one discovers the history of the county, from the prehistoric period to the Contemporary Age.
A great place to start your discovery in Melgaço where you may even require information about other monuments to visit, where to eat and where to sleep. Come fall in love with Melgaço!
