The  Praça do Comércio , formerly  the Palace Square , is a square in  downtown Lisbon  situated along the  Tagus River , in the area was the site of the palace of the kings of  Portugal  for about two centuries and which is now partly occupied by some government departments . It is one of the largest squares in  Europe , with about 36 000 m² (180m x 200m)

In one of the squares buildings is the Café Marinho da Arcada, which is the oldest cafe in the city. The yellow color of the buildings is the original color and the one you see today, although after the 1910 revolution they were painted pink. In the center of Praça do Comércio is the equestrian statue of D. José I, which was erected in 1775 by Joaquim Machado Castro, an important Portuguese sculptor. It was the first equestrian (cavalry) statue of Portugal and one of the first in the world to be merged into its dimensions at one time. In Praça do Comércio is the  Rua Augusta Arch , another tourist point of the city.
