Free Castle Lift Lisbon linking Baixa to Castelo

Inaugurated on 31 August 2013 the new Castle Elevator, which as the name implies helps the population and tourists travel from the Baixa area to the Castelo de São Jorge hill. In fact this route consists of the climb not of one, but of 2 lifts, the Castle Elevator which is located at Rua dos Fanqueiros at nrs 170 to 178 which makes a first part of the climb and leaves us at Rua da Madalena at nrs 140 / 155, and for a second elevator, Chão do Loureiro, which to find it we have to follow the arrows of Pingo Doce, it is true, the entrance to this elevator is leaves inside the entrance of this commercial surface. Then we go to Pingo Doce, and as soon as we get inside we see at the bottom 2 lifts that raise us to the top of the building where besides being much closer to the Castle, It also leaves us in a place with a privileged view over Lisbon, and especially downtown. The opening hours of these lifts are from 9am to 9pm, and trips are totally free !! :)

The  Elevator Castle  is a set of two public elevators free access in Lisbon, Portugal, linking downtown to the Castle of São Jorge. The first one connects Rua dos Fanqueiros to Rua da Madalena and has an exit to Largo Adelino Amaro da Costa. The second elevator is at Chão do Loureiro Market.

Unlike many similar infrastructures erected in Lisbon in the late 19th century - including the mythical Santa Justa Lift (which also links Baixa but the opposite hill of Bairro Alto), the  Castelo Lift  is a 21st century work : opened on August 31, 2013, eight months later than scheduled.

The  Castle Elevator  was an idea of connecting the Pombaline downtown to São Jorge Castle, in Lisbon, Portugal, by a fast and convenient public transport. A few years after being abandoned (see below), a new project for the Lisbon downtown lift connection to São Jorge Castle was approved on May 20, 2009 by the Lisbon City Council.

The connection is made by a first elevator placed in a building (vacant in 2009) of Rua dos Fanqueiros that has an exit to Largo Adelino Amaro da Costa. From here another elevator, inside the former Chão do Loureiro Market (currently a Pingo Doce supermarket), establishes the remaining bridge with the Costa do Castelo. In addition to the lift, the market was also expected to include a car silo car park, a supermarket and a panoramic restaurant
