Museum in the historic city center of Lamego Portugal
The Lamego Museum is in the historic city center of Lamego, in the old Episcopal Palace, a building rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century, under the patronage of Bishop Manuel de Vasconcelos Pereira.
Today the Lamego Museum is an important reference in the regional, national, and even international panorama, given the quality and the uniqueness of some of the works of art that it has, especially the objects classified in 2006 by the Portuguese State as National Treasures. medieval sarcophagus, decorated with a hunting scene in low relief; the panels Vasco Fernandes painted for the Sé de Lamego, between 1506-1511; the Flemish tapestry set, woven in Brussels in the first half of the 16th century, and the 17th century figured tile panels with bucolic and hunting scenes.
The Lamego Museum is housed in the former Episcopal Palace, in an imposing building on Camões Square, in the downtown, where several buildings of historical significance are concentrated - the Cathedral to the north of the building being the most important. - and several sunny houses of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that currently house different services.
In front of Camões square is one of the main arteries of the city, which extends through a tree-lined garden and avenue that culminates in the start of St. Stephens Mount, dominated by the monumental staircase, which connects the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remedies to the city.
On the right are the old Jesus, Mary, Ana Seminary, a building from the 18th and 19th centuries that is currently owned by the Portuguese Army, and the Ribeiro Conceição Theater, which occupies a 17th century palace, which was Hospital da Misericórdia.
