Alcochete Municipal Museum Alcochete Portugal

The Alcochete Municipal Museum, which has been in existence for three decades and has been part of the Portuguese Museum Network since 2001, consists of two permanent exhibition centers.

In 1988 opens to the public the first of the nuclei, the Headquarters. It addresses different themes - archeology, history and ethnography based on the presentation of their collections on chronological criteria, where the valorization of the local cultural heritage is a priority.

Its collection of archeology includes findings from the Paleolithic, Neolithic and Roman times, the latter of great importance, resulting from excavations carried out in the geographical area of the municipality.

A small but valuable set of objects highlights the importance of Alcochete in the context of the local municipality in the 15th and 16th centuries. A significant ethnographic collection gave rise to several exhibition areas, highlighting the importance of maritime activities, where saliculture, shipbuilding and river transportation complemented each other, developed and gave rise to very peculiar beliefs and festivities.
