8 must-see places in Serra da Estrela sky


Loriga is known as the “Portuguese Switzerland”  due to its extraordinary landscape and geographical location. Surrounded by mountains, of which Penha dos Abutres (1828m altitude) and Penha do Gato (1771m) stand out, it is embraced by two waterways: Ribeira de Loriga or “Courelas or“ Nave ”, and Ribeira de St. Benedict. The Ribeira de Loriga, is one of the largest tributaries of the Alva River.

 

Alvoco da Serra

 

Located in the heart of Serra da Estrela Natural Park, Alvoco da Serra is a place of strong traditions and very ancient origins, preserving some traces of the presence of the Romans, namely a sidewalk where coins of the time were found.

 

Bread Museum

 

The Bread Museum, based in Seia at Quinta Fonte do Marrão, is a private museum that aims to collect, preserve and display the objects and heritage of Portuguese bread in its ethnographic, political, social, historical, religious and artistic aspects.

The Bread Museum project dates back to 1996, arising from synergies created between historians, entrepreneurs and teachers. From that year 1996 until its opening on 26 September 2002, the estate has been collected either through antique dealers, bookstores and auctions or through donations.

 

Guard

 

Founded in the 12th century by the second king of Portugal, D. Sancho I, Guarda is set in the mountainous landscape of Serra da Estrela and is considered the highest city in the country, imposing an impressive height of 1056 meters. Torre is the highest peak of the Serra (1993 meters), as well as the highest in mainland Portugal, and houses the famous ski resort of Serra da Estrela Natural Park.

 

Head

 

In the middle of Serra da Estrela we find the village of Cabeça, a picturesque village where the shale houses predominate, a place full of charms and stories that is worth unraveling. The tradition and identity of this village is closely associated with the cultivation of terraced fields and pastoralism.
