Alfama Fado Museum Lisbon Portugal

The Fado Museum was opened on September 25, 1998 and is a museum dedicated to the universe of fado and guitar. The museum is located in the Alfama district of Lisbon, Portugal.

This cultural space has a permanent exhibition, a temporary exhibition space, a documentation center, a thematic store, an auditorium, a restaurant and the Museum School, where Portuguese guitar and Fado guitar courses are taught, and where It is possible to attend a seminar for lyricists. The school also has a rehearsal office for interpreters.

Since 2016 the museum has made available, through the Internet, a Digital Sound Archive with access to thousands of sound records since the beginning of the twentieth century, through performer and repertoire research.

Since its opening to the public in 1998, the spoils of hundreds of performers, authors, composers, musicians, instrument builders, scholars and researchers, professional and amateur artists, in short, have converged on hundreds of personalities who have witnessed and they built the history of Fado and they did not hesitate to give us the testimonies of its affective and memorial heritage for the construction of a common project.

The Museu do Fado pays tribute to all, investigating, conserving and promoting the singularities of this performative art, originating in the historical districts of Lisbon and which over a history of approximately 200 years has been able to absorb diverse cultural and technological influences, drawing a path of consecration in the most diverse areas, and which have been perpetuated throughout most of the twentieth century, in exact proportion to its popular celebration.
