Lisbon Museum Saint Anthony Alfama Portugal
The Lisbon Museum - Santo António (former Antoniano Museum) is dedicated to Santo António de Lisboa. It was inaugurated in the 80s of the twentieth century and aims to portray the various artistic forms assumed by the devotion of the Lisboners to Santo António, the most popular saint of Lisbon, who is believed to have been born in the house where the museum is now located.
On display are religious pieces, iconography (sculpture, engraving, painting and ceramics), liturgical implements, books, clothing and various objects related to the life of St. Anthony. Located in the historical area of the city, next to the Santo António Church, close to the Cathedral, this nucleus of the Lisbon Museum shows the saints figure, emphasizing its relationship with Lisbon, where he was born and lived until he was 20 years old.Inaugurated on July 18, 2014, the Lisbon Museum - Santo António is the result of the transformation of the previous Antoniano Museum, open to the public in June 1962, into a new exhibition space, expanded and totally reformulated, where two types of buildings are combined - the original space, which was an integral part of the Santo António Church, and the new space, housed in a typical building of Pombaline performance.
