Funchal Museum of Contemporary Art Portugal


The Funchal Museum of Contemporary Art ( MACFunchal ) was a museum, located in the São Tiago Fortress of Funchal, in the city of Funchal, Madeira. In October 2015, it changed its name to MUDAS. Museum of Contemporary Art of Madeira and its collection passed to the Arts Center - Casa das Mudas.

Designed by architect Paulo David, the Mudas.Museum of Contemporary Art , this is a modern building internationally awarded for its architecture and perfect integration into the landscape, is the scene of various exhibitions, musical performances, plays and conferences.

The Mudas.Museu de Arte Contemporânea is located on a hill overlooking the village of Calheta, in the west of Madeira, just over 30 minutes away from Funchal. 

The museum and artistic collection of this space was transferred from the S. Tiago Fortress in Funchal in a total of 400 pieces, from the 1960s to the present.
This nucleus, composed by works by several renowned national artists, are represented in its collection several Portuguese artists, including some born in Madeira: Lourdes Castro, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Fernando Calhau, Antonio Palolo, Rui Sanches, Joao Queiroz, Michael Biberstein, Patricia Garrido, Martha Telles, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Ana Vidigal, Gäetan, Eduardo Batarda, Daniel Blaufuks, Barbara Assis Pacheco, Miguel Branco, Pedro Calapez, Pedro Casqueiro, Rui Chafes, Pedro Portugal, Jose Pedro Croft, Ilda David, Jorge Molder, Jose Loureiro, Alvaro Lapa, Ana Hatherly, João Vilhena, among many others.
This infrastructure has a covered construction area of 12 000 m², having been built as an extension of the existing "House of Culture of Calheta", where the space "Gallery" currently functioned.
