Setúbal in Portugal fish market is one of the best in the world

Fish markets around the world can show local fishing but also some of the culture of the area. These are the words of Mark Drabich, president of Metropolitan Seafood & Gourmet, at USA Today

It was from this conversation that the US newspaper made a list of the worlds most famous fish markets and the precious source of food.

Portugal also has a place in this selection and is represented by the Livramento fish market in Setúbal, which joins Tsukiji (in Japan), considered the largest in the world.

The publication highlights that Setúbal is “an area with a great fishing tradition” and underlines that, in that market, the star is sardines. They even recall that Portugal consumes 13 sardines per second in June, the month of the popular festivities of St. Anthony, St. John and St. Peter.

Opened in 1930, it is an Art Deco style building. At the top of the south, it has a set of blue and white tiles by Pedro Pinto, representing scenes of the daily lives of the people of the time, such as fishing, salt, farming and the market. Inside the environment is alive and colorful.
